From the 1st Annual Report of the North Carolina Railroad Commission, dated December 31, 1891: The Norfolk & Southern Railroad was organized January 20th, 1870, as the Elizabeth City & Norfolk Railroad Company. Road opened to Elizabeth City, NC, 45 miles, June 1st, 1881; to Edenton, NC, December 6th, 1881. Name changed by legislative enactment February 1st, 1883. The property of the Norfolk Southern Railroad Company was
placed in the hands of Watson B. Dickerman as receiver on the
22d day of November, 1889, by order of the United States Court
