In the year 1900, the South Carolina Historical Society began publishing a quarterly magazine known as "The South Carolina Historical and Genealogical Magazine," first pulled together and edited by Mr. Alexander Samuel Salley, Jr., who prefered to be known as A.S. Salley, Jr., and who was the Secretary, Treasurer, and Librarian of the SC Historical Society at that time. The magazine was led by subsequent editors as time went on. In 1952, the name was changed to "The South Carolina Historical Magazine," and it continues to be published to this day.

When launched in 1900, each quarterly issue cost $1.00 for non-members of the SC Historical Society, for whom each issue was free. Each quarterly issue typically included two (2) to ten (10) unique articles, many that were continued in subsequent issues and volumes. The columns below provide an overview of what was included in each quarterly issue, but is certainly not all inclusive. Each completed volume does include an Index at the end of all articles.
