An Act to Incorporate Certain Religious and Charitable Societies, and to Renew and Amend the Charters of Certain Towns, Villages, and Other Societies Heretofore Granted, and for Other Purposes.

I. Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives, now met and sitting in General Assembly, and by the authority of the same, That Edward J. Mims, George A. Addison, Bud. C. Bryan, John Huiet, Luther R. Gwaltney, James A. DeVoe, John Lake, Zedekiah Wadkins, Eugene Burt, Albert G. Morton, and their associates and successors, be, and they are hereby, created a body politic and corporate, under the name and style of "The Edgefield Female College, of Edgefield," for the period of twenty-one years from the ratification of this Act; and shall have power to have and use a common seal, to sue and be sued, plead and be impleaded, in any Court of this State; to make all by-laws necessary and proper for the purposes of said corporation, not repugnant to the laws of this State, with power to purchase and hold real and personal estate to an amount not exceeding one hundred thousand dollars, and the same to alien, lease or transfer, and in general to exercise and enjoy all the powers and privileges incident to such corporations.

II. That John J. Ingram, Henry Kelley, W. R. Coskrey, G. A. Huggius and D. E. Hodge, and their associates and successors, be, and they are hereby, created a body politic and corporate, under the name and style of "Manning Academy," in Clarendon District, for the period of fourteen years from the ratification of this Act; with power to have and use a common seal, to sue and be sued, plead and be impleaded, in any Court of this State; to make all by-laws necessary and proper for the purposes of said corporation not repugnant to the laws of this State, and generally to exercise and enjoy all the powers and privileges incident to such corporations.

III - Good Hope Baptist Church in Edgefield District incorporated for 21 years.

IV - New Hope Congregation in Fairfield District incorporated for 21 years.

V - Ladies' Card Factory of Greenwood incorporated for 21 years.

VI - Palmetto Exporting and Importing Company charter amended.

VII - Village of Lowndesville in Abbeville District charter renewed for 21 years.

VIII - Town of Newberry charter amended to assign patrol duty to citizens.

IX - The Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy of Charleston charter renewed for 21 years.

X - Town of Chester charter renewed for 14 years.

XI - Beech Branch Baptist Church in Beaufort District charter renewed for 21 years.

XII - All Town Councils may take charge of their street and road repairs.

In the Senate House, the twenty-third day of December, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty-four, and in the eighty-ninth year of the sovereignty and independence of the State of South Carolina.
