An Act to Incorporate Certain Villages, Societies, Companies, and to Renew and Amend Certain Charters Heretofore Granted, and to Establish the Principles on Which Charters of Incorporation Will Hereafter be Granted.

I, II, III, IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX, X, XI - Village of Newberry incorporated.

XXII - Village of Yorkville incorporated.

XXIII - Cheraw Bridge Company incorporated.

XXIV - Powers increased for the Town Council of Aiken.

XV. Be it further enacted, by the authority aforesaid, That the Cheraw Academical Society be, and the same is hereby re-incorporated, by the name and style aforesaid, and is hereby invested with all the powers and privileges heretofore granted to the same; and all the property heretofore belonging to said corporation, or acquired since the expiration of their charter, be and the same is hereby vested in said corporation; the charter to continue for fourteen years.

XVI - Pendleton Farmers' Society incorporated.

XVII - Zion Church of the town of Winnsborough incorporated.

XVIII - Village of Greenville re-incorporated for four (4) years.

XIX - South Carolina Manufacturing Company re-incorporated for fourteen (14) years.

XX - Charleston Fire Company of Axemen re-incorporated for fourteen (14) years.

XXI - Powers increased for the Town Council of Edgefield.

XXII - Hopewell Baptist Church in Anderson District incorporated.

XXIII - Bethlehem Baptist Church in Abbeville District.

XXIV - Aimwell Presbyterian Church in Fairfield District incorporated.

XXV - Presbyterian Church at Little Mountain in Abbeville District incorporated.

XXVI - Mount Vernon Church of Edgefield District incorporated.

XXVII - German Evangelical Lutheran Church of Charleston incorporated.

XXVIII. That the religious societies aforesaid shall have succession of officers and members according to their respective by-laws; and shall have power, respectively, to make by-laws, not repugnant to the laws of the land; to have, use and keep a common seal, and the same to alter at will, to sue and be sued, plead and be impleaded, in any Court in this State, and to have and enjoy every right incident to incorporation. They are empowered to retain, possess and enjoy all such property as they may respectively possess, or be entitled to, or which shall hereafter be given, bequeathed to, or in any manner be acquired by them; and to sell, alien, or in any way transfer the same, or any part thereof; provided the amount of property so held, shall in no case exceed ten thousand dollars; except that the German Evangelical Lutheran Church may hold property to the amount of twenty thousand dollars. This Act shall be a public Act, and continue for fourteen years.

XXIX, XXX, XXXI - Carolina Volunteers and the Spring Hill Rifle Company are both incorporated.

XXXII, XXXIII, XXXIV - Palmetto Fire Engine Company in Charleston, Harmony Lodge No. 17 of Ancient Free Masons at Barnwell Court House, Independent Order of Odd Fellows South Carolina Lodge No. 1 of Ancient Free Masons in the city of Charleston, Wentworth Street Baptist Church in Charleston, are all incorporated.

XXXV & XXXVI - Powers increased for the Town Council of Winnsborough.

XXXVII - Charleston Ice Company incorporated.

XXXVIII - St. Mark's Church, Clarendon incorporated.

XXXIX - Town of Cheraw's charter renewed for fourteen (14) years.

XL - South Carolina Grand Lodge of Independent Order of Odd Fellows incorporated.

XLI. Be it further enacted, That it shall become part of the charter of every corporation, which shall at the present, or any succeeding session of the General Assembly, receive a grant of a charter, or any renewal, amendment or modification thereof, (unless the Act granting such charter, renewal, amendment or modification, shall in express terms except it,) that every charter of incorporation granted, renewed, or modified, as aforesaid, shall at all times remain subject to amendment, alteration or repeal, by the Legislative authority.

In the Senate House, the seventeenth day of December, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and forty-one, and in the sixty-sixth year of the Sovereignty and Independence of the United States of America.
