South Carolina - Acts on Education Topics

An Act to Incorporate Certain Villages, Societies and Companies, and to Renew or Amend Certain Charters Heretofore Granted, and for Other Purposes.

December 21, 1839

The Statutes at Large of South Carolina, Volume XI, Pages 70-76

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives now met and sitting in General Assembly, and by the authority of the same, as follows:

I - Village of Lowndesville in Abbeville District incorporated.

II - Edgefield and Orangeburg charters extended fourteen (14) years.

III - Baptist Denomination of South Carolina charter extended fourteen (14) years.

IV - Charleston Port Society for Promoting the Gospel among Seamen incoporated.

V - Little Generostee Church, Shiloh Church, and Bathsheba Church, all in the Anderson District incorporated.

VI - St. Matthew's Lutheran Church in Orangeburg District, Mispah Church in Darlington District, Regular Baptist Church of Christ at Joice's Branch in Barnwell District, and the Union Regular Baptist Church of Christ on the South side of the Upper Three Runs in Barnwell District incorporated.

VII - Episcopal Church of All Saints Parish in Horry District, and Bethel Baptist Church in Sumter District, both had their charters extended fourteen (14) years.,

VIII - Planters' Club, Pee Dee incorporated.

IX - Rice Company of South Carolina incorporated.

X - Village of Pendleton charter extended fourteen (14) years.

XI - Cheraw Engine Company incorporated.

XII - Abbeville Mineral Spring Company incorporated.

XIII - South Carolina Mechanic's Association incorporated.

XIV - Humility Lodge, No. 12 incoporated.

XV. The President and members of the M'Phersonville Education Society, and their successors, are hereby created a body politic and corporate in law, by the name and style of the M'Phersonville Education Society, for the term of fourteen years; and are empowered to hold property, real and personal, to an amount not exceeding five thousand dollars. And the members of the Greenville Library Society and their successors, are created a body politic and corporate, by the name and style of the Greenville Library Society, for the term of fourteen years, and with power to hold property, real and personal, to an amount not exceeding five thousand dollars.

XVI - Charleston Ancient Artillery Society, Washington Light Infantry Company of Charleston, Artilleurs Francais, and Charleston Chamber of Commerce - all charters extended fourteen (14) years.

XVII - Fire Company of Charleston Neck, Marion Fire Engine Company of Charleston Neck, Charleston Neck Fire Company or Axemen, and German Fire Company - all charters extended fourteen (14) years.

XVIII - Cross Roads Baptist Church in Anderson District incorporated.

XIX - Baptist Church of Aiken incorporated.

XX - Town of Aiken intendant and wardens authorized to levy a tax.

XXI. The members of the Philomathean Society of Walterborough Academy, and their successors, are hereby created a body corporate and politic, for the term of fourteen years, with power to hold estate, real and personal, of the value of five thousand dollars. And the charter of the Orangeburgh Academical Society, is hereby revived and made of force, for the further term of fourteen years.

XXII. Joseph Cox, Halbert Acker, J. P. Reed, Chester Kingsley, Wm. Telford, and Rev. Matthew Gambrell, and their successors in office, are hereby created a body politic and corporate, by the name and style of the Trustees of Calhoun Academy, in Anderson District; and shall have power to hold estate, real and personal, to an amount, not exceeding ten thousand dollars.

XXIII - Pendleton Manufacturing Company incorporated.

XXIV. The Act passed December 19th, 1835, to incorporate Cokesbury School, at Cokesbury, in Abbeville District, is hereby amended, so that the Trustees of said school may have and hold estate, real and personal, not exceeding in value, the sum of one hundred thousand dollars, instead of the sum limited in the said Act.

XXV - Aveleigh Church added a new trustee.

XXVI - Dorchester Baptist Church in Anderson District incorporated.

XXVII. Edward T. Heriot, A. Glennie, J. J. Ward, and such other persons as now are, or may hereafter be officers and trustees of the All Saints Academy, are hereby created a body politic and corporate, by the name and style of the Officers and Trustees of the All Saints Academy, and they shall have power to hold real and personal estate, not exceeding in value the sum of sixty thousand dollars.

XXVIII - Seventy-six Association incorporated.

XXIX - Second Independent or Congregational Church in Charleston re-incorporated as the Unitarian Church in Charleston for twenty-one (21) years.

XXX - Prince Frederick's Chapel, Pee Dee in Georgetown District, and Rocky Creek Baptist Church in Edgefield District, both incorporated.

XXXI - Commissioners of the Lower Three Runs in Barnwell District incorporated.

XXXII. Dr. James Durant, John E. Dennis, A. G. Cokerell, James McCullum, Hardy Stuckey, William Robert Fraser, and J. W.English, and their successors, are hereby incorporated as Trustees of the Bishopville Academy, with power to hold property, real and personal, to an amount not exceeding five thousand dollars, and to continue their corporate existence for the term of fourteen years.

XXXIII - Town of Columbia authorized to levy a tax on dogs.

XXXIV. The bodies corporate and politic, created by this Act, shall, respectively, when no other term of duration is expressed, have corporate existence for fourteen years, and shall, respectively, in addition to the power hereby expressly conferred upon them, have all the power in cident to corporations by the common law.

XXXV. This Act shall be deemed and taken to be a public Act.
