The Statesville & Western Railroad was chartered on March 2, 1887 and the line opened in September of 1887. It was leased by the Richmond & Danville Railroad.

From the 1st Annual Report of the North Carolina Railroad Commission, dated December 31, 1891:

Chartered March 2d, 1887; road opened September, 1887. The road is leased to and operated by the Richmond & Danville Railroad Company.

The purpose of this Company was to construct and operate a railroad from a point on the Western North Carolina Railroad, near the town of Statesville, to a point on the Tennessee line, passing by or near the towns of Taylorsville and Wilkesboro.
