The Halifax & Scotland Neck Railroad was originally incorporated in 1872, but it was never constructed. In 1878, it was rechartered as the Scotland Neck Railroad. Construction began in 1879, was completed in 1882, and was operational on October 1.

In 1883, it was sold to the Wilmington & Weldon Railroad and was operated as the Scotland Neck branch of the Wilmington & Weldon Railroad, Halifax to Scotland Neck, 20 miles.
