The Norfolk & Camden Railroad was chartered in Virginia in 1892, and in North Carolina in 1895.
According to The Southeastern Reporter, Volumes 77-78, February 22 to May 17, 1913 (a Virginia Newspaper), this railroad was constructed from the Elizabeth River in Virginia to the VA/NC State Line and a considerable distance into the state of North Carolina. Exact points are not provided.
On February 28, 1899, the NC Legislature issued an Act to formalize the charter of the Dismal Swamp Railroad, with Grustavus Milhiser, T. K. Parrish, and C. R. Johnson as incorporators. They had recently acquired all of the assets of the Norfolk & Camden Railroad at public auction on October 12, 1898.
According to The Southeastern Reporter, Volumes 77-78, February 22 to May 17, 1913 (a Virginia Newspaper), and an article in The Railway and Locomotive Historical Society Bulletin No. 64, May of 1944, as now found on JSTOR, it is quite clear that there was, indeed, a Dismal Swamp Railroad Company, at least one chartered in the state of Virginia in 1899, a successor to the Norfolk & Camden Railroad Company, which was chartered in Virginia in 1892.
