*1846 reorganized as the Charlotte & South Carolina Railroad.

This was the first railroad in operation to the small town of Charlotte. It was soon followed by many others, making Charlotte a major railroad hub within the state of North Carolina.

On February 18th of 1865, General William Tecumseh Sherman's troops, moving in two columns, the 17th and 20th corps, marched from Columbia to Winnsboro, thirty miles north, with many soldiers on the Charlotte & South Carolina Railroad, which they thoroughly destroyed behind them.
