North Carolina - Offical Documents Pertaining to NC Railroads

The North Carolina state government was instrumental in creating and governing the rules and regulations of all railroads within the state boundaries. The Legislature passed legislative Acts to charter all public railroads since the railroad companies were granted the right of emininent domain. In 1891, the legislature created the Railroad Commission to provide oversight to all railroads and telegraph companies. In 1899, the railroad commission was abandoned in favor of a broader group, now known as the Corporation Commission, that added oversight of banks, savings and loans, and telephone companies as well as railroads and telegraph companies.
