Per AirNav - activated 9/1937. In 1929, the Tufts family, famous for their establishment of the famed Pinehurst Resort, opened a dirt runway and named it Knollwood Airport. In 1935, Moore County acquired the airport from the Knollwood Development Company. From 1942 to 1945, the airport was leased to the U. S. Army Air Corps.

4) Knollwood Army Auxiliary Air Field

From 1942 to 1945, Knollwood Airport was leased to the U. S. Army Air Corps and was used as the Knollwood Army Auxiliary Air Field. In 1945, the airport became the Pinehurst-Southern Pines Airport.

Was the Pinehurst-Southern Pines Airport (see below), was Knollwood Army Air Field and Knollwood Airport (see above). US Airways Express carrier CCAir operated flights to Charlotte with various turboprop aircraft from 1991-2002. Service ended shortly after the September 11th attacks in 2001. Commercial service returned briefly with the arrival of Delta Air Lines in 2006. The airline operated seasonal CRJ flights to its Atlanta hub under the Delta Connection banner. The service ended in November 2007. From 1945 until January 13, 1992, the County leased out the Fixed Base Operations (FBO). The latest FBO being Air Moore, Inc. / Pinehurst Jet Center. In January 1993, Moore County purchased the remaining 16 years of FBO lease from the Pinehurst Jet Center plus all business assets. The County now owns the airport which includes land and buildings as well as the assets of the FBO business. July 20, 1993, the North Carolina General Assembly created the Moore County Airport Authority to operate and maintain the Moore County Airport facilities.

6) Pinehurst-Southern Pines Airport

Was the Knollwood Airport then Knollwood Army Air Field, see above. In 1945, the airport became the Pinehurst-Southern Pines Airport and Piedmont Airlines began service, ending in the late 1960s. From 1945 until January 13, 1992, the County leased out the Fixed Base Operations (FBO). The latest FBO being Air Moore, Inc. / Pinehurst Jet Center. 1980, name changed to Moore County Airport, see above.
