1) Asheville & Hendersonville Airport

On October 13, 1928, regular service opened. Field flights cost $3; city flights cost $5; journeys over Mt. Mitchell, Chimney Rock, and Asheville cost $20. The U.S. Army Corp of Engineers operated the airport from 1943-1947. The 1960 Jeppesen Airway Manual depicted the Asheville & Hendersonville Airport as having three paved runways (with the longest being the 4,079' - Runway 4/22), as well as a taxiway leading to a ramp on the east side of the field, around which were clustered a large number of small buildings and a tower.

The U.S. Army Corp of Engineers operated the Asheville & Hendersonville Airport from 1943-1947, providing air transportation for their communications and weather headquarters. During this time, federal funds were acquired to build a total of three 4,000 foot paved runways, a control tower and a fire station.
