North Carolina - Civil Aviation

The first commercial airport in North Carolina was Maynard Field, opened in 1919, about halfway between Winston-Salem and Kernersville in Forsyth County. In 1932, the precursor to the Aircraft Owners & Pilots Association (AOPA) was founded in Pennsylvania. AirNav is a very useful source online for all things to do with airports. At some point in time (the state website does not tell us when), the North Carolina Department of Transportation created the Division of Aviation. Also ashamed of its history by not providing any history on its website, the North Carolina Airports Association was created to strengthen North Carolina airports through legislative advocacy, professional growth, and by promoting the positive impacts of airports. Perhaps someone in these two latter organizations will add some useful history online.
