Established in 1793, and incorporated on January 9, 1855, Roxboro is the only municipality in Person County and has a population of 8,861. Many of the buildings that comprise the uptown National Register Historic District were built before the turn of the twentieth century, when the railroad transformed an isolated northern Piedmont town into a thriving commercial center.

Whenever Roxboro is mentioned, many people think of family farms and small town living. Person County has its own distinct history that makes it unique and special to its inhabitants. Uptown Roxboro retains the ambiance of small town living. There are many historic homes and buildings along with the Person County Museum of History.

There are specialty shops, restaurants, cultural activities and entertainment for all ages in Uptown Roxboro. Visit one of the authentic drugstore soda fountains, shop for antiques, clothes and other items or take in a show at the Kirby Civic Auditorium.

As Person C.H., the town was granted a US Post Office on April 1, 1795, and its first Postmaster was Mr. Charles Moore. On April 21, 1806, the US Post Office Department changed the name to Roxborough, with Posmaster Mr. John Williams. On December 17, 1892, the US Post Office Department officially change the name to Roxboro. It has been in continuous operation ever since.
