The American Revolution in North Carolina

Dempsey Burgess

Major in the Pasquotank County Regiment of Militia - 1775-1776
Lt. Colonel in the 2nd Pasquotank County Regiment of Militia - 1776-1777
Lt. Colonel in the Camden County Regiment of Militia - 1777-1779
Colonel over the Camden County Regiment of Militia - 1779

On 9/9/1775, Dempsey Burgess was commissioned as a Major under Col. John Lowry in the Pasquotank County Regiment of Militia.

On 4/22/1776, Dempsey Burgess was commissioned as a Lt. Colonel under Col. Isaac Gregory in the 2nd Pasquotank County Regiment of Militia (which had been created on 12/22/1775).

On 5/9/1777, the NC General Assembly created Camden County and its associated regiment of Militia, which resulted in the abolishment of the 2nd Pasquotank County Regiment of Militia. Dempsey Burgess was now a Lt. Colonel under Col. Isaac Gregory in the Camden County Regiment of Militia.

On or around 5/15/1779, Dempsey Burgess was commissioned as Colonel/Commandant over the Camden County Regiment of Militia when Isaac Gregory was promoted to brigadier general over the Edenton District Brigade of Militia. Other records suggest that his commission was actually dated 7/30/1779, but it is this Author's opinion that the latter date is when Dempsey Burgess resigned his commission. No matter on the exact date, it is clear that Dempsey Burgess did not serve very long as the Colonel/Commandant over the Camden County Regiment.
