The First Session of this General Assembly met from January 12th to July 22nd in 1983. The Second Session met from March 7th to July 7th in 1984. An Extra Session was convened on August 26, 1983 (one day). The previous NC General Assembly reapportioned the House of Representatives districts based upon the 1980 U.S. Census, effective this term. As a temporary measure for this General Assembly only, the number of districts was increased from forty-five (45) to fifty-three (53). This apportionment would be adjusted again during this General Assembly, and the number of House districts would change again for the next General Assembly (1985). For the first time in State history, the House districts were defined with parts of some counties in one district and other parts of these counties in another district. This method would continue to the present day. To date, this Author has not been able to locate a decent map of this temporary districts layout, so greater detail of each district's makeup is provided herein. |
