| In 1717, the Commons House of Assembly adopted the Parish system as election districts. The four South Carolina counties continued to exist, but did not serve as election districts. As the population grew, new parishes were created, but they typically did not become new election districts for several years after their creation. Change is never easy for some people. | ||
