| On December 24, 1798, the North Carolina General
Assembly passed an Act
to establish Smithville Academy in the town of Smithville in
Brunswick County. Seven (7) trustees were named in the Act. |
| Also on December 24, 1798, the North Carolina
General Assembly passed an Act
authorizing the trustees of Smithville Academy in Brunswick County
to raise $7,000 via lottery or lotteries. |
| On December 19, 1804, the North Carolina General
Assembly passed an Act
to amend the original 1798 Act establishing Smithville Academy
in Brunswick County. Nine (9) new trustees were named in the
Act. |
| On December 28, 1816, the North Carolina General
Assembly passed an Act
to name fifty-six (56) new trustees from six (6) different counties
to manage the affairs of the Smithville Academy in the town of
Smithville in Brunswick County. |
| On December 31, 1823, the North Carolina General
Assembly passed an Act
to amend the charter of the Smithfield Academy and to allow the
trustees (not named) to raise $3,000 via a lottery. |
In the Biennial Report of the Superintendent
of Public Instruction for the scholastic years of 1889 and 1890,
it was reported that there were six private schools for white
children and one private school for colored children in Brunswick

Assembly passed an Act
to incorporate the Southport Naval Marine Academy in the town
of Southport in Brunswick County. Three (3) incorporators were
named in the Act. |
